Feb 26 – A crawler crane collapsed at a construction site of the SUKE Expressway project along the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) at about 9 am in the morning, causing minor injuries to crane operator and heavy traffic congestion from Ampang to Cheras.

A man was injured after a crawler crane collapsed onto the middle of a highway during construction works on the Sungai Besi-Ulu Kelang Elevated Expressway in Ampang this morning.

Seven personnel from the Ampang Fire and Rescue Department station where dispatched to the scene after they are notified at 10.20 am.

A Selangor Fire and Rescue Department spokesperson said the 36-year-old victim, the crane operator, suffered minor injuries to his hip and was treated by paramedics at the location. “The victim was given first aid treatment and subsequently brought to the Hospital Ampang. No further casualties were reported,” the spokesperson said.

Selangor Traffic Investigations and Enforcement chief Superintendent Azman Shari’at said authorities were initially alerted to the incident near Jalan Bunga Anggerik, Dataran Ukay along MRR2 around 9.58am.

Initial investigation showed that the crawler crane was working on an elevated ground beside the highway, lifting casings for the piling works of a retaining wall when it lost its balance and its boom fell onto two lanes of the highway.

The accident has caused a massive traffic crawl spanning at least four kilometers as only one lane is left for the cars to pass through.

The consultants and contractors involved in the project have reacted towards the situation and at 6.20pm, two mobile cranes have been deployed to remove the demised crane from the road.
