UK crane rental company Forsyth of Denny has taken delivery of the last new 500 tonne Liebherr LTM 1500-8.1 in the UK as well as the first 120 tonne LTM 1120-4.1 to go into service in Scotland.

The LTM 1500-8.1 will be the last of this model to be sold to the UK and Ireland after being superseded by the 650 tonne LTM 1650-8.1, which was introduced at bauma 2019. Joining a used LTM 1500-8.1 bought last year, the latest unit features a seven section 84 metre telescopic boom, a 91 metre luffing jib and Liebherr’s Y-Guy super lift system. It has also been supplied with a refinery kit for operation in potential flammable gas environments.

Long Boom 120-tonne Mobile Crane

The four axle LTM 1120-4.1 features a seven section 66 metre main boom topped by a 10.8 to 19 metre bi-fold swingaway extension, which offsets by up to 40 degrees. A seven metre insert extends the maximum tip height to more than 94 metres and offers a maximum radius of 64 metres. The crane can travel within 16.5 tonne axle loads with 20 tonnes of counterweight and the bi-fold swingaway extension.

Decision On Liebherr LTM1500-8.1

General manager Mark Syme, said: “We had originally planned to add a 300 tonne mobile crane to the fleet but when the opportunity came up to acquire the last 500 tonne, we felt it was the right thing for logistical and operational reasons. We believe the concept of the 120 tonne, with a mobile crane of that capacity running on four axles with such a long telescopic boom, will find its own niche in the market.”

With three locations in Scotland and further one in Northern Ireland, the company runs a fleet of 35 All Terrain and crawler cranes as well as a fleet of transport and haulage vehicles and is the UK distributor of Eng tower cranes. The two new cranes are part of a six unit Liebherr order placed earlier this year.
