In a devastating incident, a laborer lost their life while six others sustained injuries when a gantry crane collapsed at the construction site of the National High Speed Rail Corridor, famously known as the bullet train project connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad, in the Karjan taluka of Gujarat’s Vadodara district on the morning of August 3rd, 2023.
The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) confirmed that the unfortunate incident occurred within the civil work (C4) segment of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) Corridor on the Mangrol-Kambola patch.
Swift action by the Vadodara fire department’s personnel led to the successful rescue of the trapped laborers at the accident scene.
The mishap transpired during the ongoing construction of the elevated high-speed rail corridor, which aims to connect Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The extensive construction work is being undertaken by the renowned infrastructure company, L&T, under the authorization of NHSRCL.
According to a statement provided to The Indian Express by NHSRCL, the accident transpired when a girder launcher, having completed 14 kilometers of girder launching, arrived at a new location near Vadodara within the MAHSR C-4 Package. The statement further noted, “The launching gantry was shifted on top of the girder transporter to the launching location and while self-unloading from the girder transporter, the wheelbase of the front support (FS) got jammed and inclined, thereby disturbing a part of the launching gantry.”
Tragically, one worker who was inspecting the wheelbase became trapped and lost their life. Six additional workers, who sustained minor injuries, were promptly admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
NHSRCL affirmed that senior officials are already on-site to assess the situation and ensure appropriate action is taken.
The heart-wrenching incident occurred on August 3rd, 2023, marking a somber day in the construction history of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor.
