On the 29th, JR East began work to lift the train with a crane to return it onto the rail at the derailment site of the Tohoku Shinkansen “Yamabiko 223” in Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture.

Due to the Fukushima-ken-oki earthquake, 16 of the 17 cars were derailed. Until now, it was lifted up with a jack and returned, but some vehicles were far off the rails and a crane was activated.

In the work that started around 9 am, a huge crane was placed beside the viaduct, and workers carefully attached the wires to the vehicle.

The vehicles returned to the rails were sequentially transported to the nearby Shiroishi Zao Station (Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture), and seven cars had moved by the 28th. The removal of the remaining 10 trains will be completed around April 2.

The Tohoku Shinkansen is suspended between Koriyama and Ichinoseki, and the entire line is expected to resume around April 20th.
