A mobile crane has crashed into a bank branch in Woodlands Centre Road early Wednesday morning (24th February 2016) after the driver lost control while making a turn.
The driver has escaped unhurt, according to the police officers at the scene. A motorcycle was seen wedged under the vehicle, but no one was injured in the accident, the police said.
The mobile crane was making a turn at around 6.30 am when the driver lost control and the vehicle skidded, overturned and smashed into the POSB branch at 2A Woodlands Centre Road.
Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it has received a call about the accident at about 7 am. A fire engine and an ambulance have been deployed to the scene shortly.
The driver, noticeably shaken, told Channel News Asia that he was heading to a construction site when the accident happened. He was unhurt but suffered a hit on his head on the back of the seat. possibly causing whiplash. He was promptly helped by two bystanders who opened the crane’s door.
Construction worker Kamal Hassan, 49, was at the scene 10 minutes before the accident happened mentioned that he heard a loud sound and saw the mobile crane overturned. A few motorcycles were crushed under the vehicle.
Concerns are raised over the structural stability as there are residents staying on the second storey and BCA would need to carry out a structural inspection.
The investigation has not been carried out yet on what has caused the crane to overturn. The crane is believed to be a Grove GMK4100L.
The recovery took place 19 hours after the incident and was recovered using two mobile cranes and a modular trailer. The hole on the bank’s wall was patched and repairs were to be completed within a week.
