The crane, a Wolffkran WK 122 SL, with a counterweighted base is owned by the contractor Jager Bau, and was working on a new leisure centre in the town which was almost completed. The crane was being dismantled at the time, and the jib had just been removed when the tower overturned rearwards onto the building, with the counterweight/counter jib crashing through the roof. The two men, 24 and 31, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
