Manitowoc to Debut Hybrid Grove GMK5150L-1e and GMK5150XLe All Terrain Cranes at bauma 2025

The GMK5150XLe

New five-axle Plug-in Hybrid cranes offer up to 20 hours of zero-emission lifting with full performance parity

Manitowoc will launch two new hybrid-powered All Terrain cranes at bauma 2025 in Munich this April—introducing the 150-tonne Grove GMK5150L-1e and the GMK5150XLe. These new Plug-in Hybrid models blend Grove’s proven five-axle carrier platforms with an electric superstructure system designed to significantly reduce onsite emissions and noise without compromising lifting capacity or performance.

Hybrid Efficiency with Full Performance

Both the GMK5150L-1e and GMK5150XLe match the load charts and lifting capabilities of their diesel-only counterparts, the GMK5150L-1 and GMK5150XL. They also retain key components such as the CCS (Crane Control System), MAXbase variable outrigger positioning, and Grove’s full suite of operational features.

  • GMK5150L-1e: 60-meter main boom
  • GMK5150XLe: 68.7-meter main boom
  • Maximum capacity: 150 tonnes
  • Hybrid battery capacity: 180 kWh
  • Emission-free lifting time: Up to 5 hours on battery; up to 20 hours when connected to mains power
  • Charging options: AC, DC, or integrated 170 kW carrier-mounted generator

The electric superstructure enables quiet and emission-free lifting for sensitive environments such as urban job sites, industrial facilities, or areas with strict emissions regulations.

Smart Charging and Reduced Carbon Footprint

The hybrid system allows the cranes to be charged via site power or through an onboard generator powered by the crane’s Mercedes-Benz carrier engine. Battery regeneration also occurs during road transit, ideally using HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) fuel, which can reduce carbon emissions by up to 90%.

The system is designed to charge while lifting when connected to power, ensuring uninterrupted operation even on extended projects.

“These new Plug-in Hybrid cranes deliver more sustainable lifting and boost owners’ environmental credentials,” said Florian Peters, Senior Product Manager at Manitowoc. “They can travel to site using HVO fuel to cut emissions, then switch to electricity for lifting—quietly and without on-site exhaust emissions. This is especially beneficial for urban work or environmentally sensitive locations.”

Ready for the Evolving Jobsite

As cities and industrial sites implement stricter emissions standards, Manitowoc’s hybrid Grove cranes offer a practical and future-proof solution for fleet owners looking to balance environmental responsibility with performance demands.

Visitors to bauma 2025 can view both new models in the Grove product area, where they will be showcased as part of Manitowoc’s broader push toward smart, connected, and sustainable lifting solutions.
