Key Features & Benefits
he SANY SAC5000C8-8 is a 500-tonne class all-terrain crane developed for high-capacity lifting in wind power, petrochemical construction, industrial assembly and major infrastructure projects. It combines a long telescopic boom, high-capacity superlift system and large counterweight package with a comparatively compact six-axle carrier. The crane uses a dual-engine arrangement, with separate power units for the carrier and upperstructure, allowing the chassis and crane systems to operate independently.
Lifting Capacity and Main Boom
Maximum rated lifting capacity is 500 tonnes, while maximum lifting moment is approximately 1,500 tonne-metres. The SAC5000C8-8 is equipped with an eight-section U-shaped telescopic main boom fabricated from high-strength fine-grain steel. The boom extends from 16.4 m to 95 m and uses a single-cylinder automatic pinning system, enabling the individual boom sections to be extended and locked in multiple combinations according to the required working radius and lifting capacity.
The main boom can be elevated through an operating range of approximately 0° to 84°. Two hydraulic cylinders provide boom elevation, with full raising or lowering taking about 95 seconds. Complete automatic extension of the telescopic boom takes approximately 1,150 seconds.
Fixed Jib and Maximum Lifting Height
For additional height and outreach, the crane can be equipped with a fixed lattice jib ranging from 12 m to 60 m. The jib can be installed at 0°, 20° or 40° offset angles, allowing the working geometry to be adapted to different lifting requirements.
With the appropriate boom and jib configuration, maximum lifting height reaches approximately 138.5 m. This gives the SAC5000C8-8 the height capability required for large industrial structures, refinery construction and wind turbine servicing work.
Superlift System
A major feature of the SAC5000C8-8 is its self-erecting superlift system. The superlift structure is positioned on both sides of the boom base and is designed so that it can be installed or removed without an auxiliary crane.
The system supports the long telescopic boom and reduces lateral bending and boom deflection under load. SANY states that the superlift can reduce long-boom deflection by approximately 20–30%, while lifting performance in certain long-boom configurations can increase by more than 200%. Automatic tensioning and deployment functions are also provided to reduce setup time and improve operating efficiency.
Counterweight System
The crane uses a modular variable counterweight system with a maximum of 143 tonnes. Different counterweight combinations can be selected depending on boom length, working radius and lifting requirement.
Several counterweight radii are available, improving flexibility when operating on restricted sites. The counterweight system can be installed and removed using remote control, reducing the need for manual handling and simplifying crane assembly.
Hoisting and Slewing Performance
The main hoist is hydraulically driven through a planetary reduction gearbox and incorporates an internal brake. Maximum single-line rope speed is approximately 130 m/min, using a 24 mm anti-rotation wire rope.
A 160-tonne hook block is supplied as standard. Optional hook blocks include approximately 200-tonne, 80-tonne, 32-tonne and 12.5-tonne units, allowing the reeving arrangement to be matched to different lifting duties.
The upperstructure provides continuous 360° rotation, with infinitely variable slewing speed from zero to approximately 1.2 rpm. An electro-proportional braking pedal is incorporated for controlled and emergency stopping.
Six-Axle All-Terrain Carrier
The SAC5000C8-8 is mounted on a purpose-built six-axle all-terrain carrier with a 12×8×12 drive and steering configuration. All six axles are steerable, while the first, third, fifth and sixth axles are driven.
Several steering programs are available, including normal road steering, all-wheel steering, crab steering, reduced-swing steering, independent rear-axle steering and rear-axle locking. These modes improve manoeuvrability when moving through confined construction sites or positioning the crane close to the lifting area.
Suspension and Mobility
The carrier uses an intelligent multi-mode hydropneumatic suspension system with adjustable ride height and hydraulic locking. Operating modes include normal suspension, rigid locking, automatic levelling, complete vehicle raising or lowering and individual-point adjustment.
The system also monitors vehicle attitude and axle loads, allowing the suspension to adapt to changing road conditions and improve stability during travel.
Maximum road speed is approximately 70 km/h, while minimum turning radius is around 12 m. Ground clearance is approximately 355 mm, and maximum gradeability is stated at 44%. The crane uses twelve large 505-series tyres.
Carrier Engine and Transmission
The carrier is powered by a Weichai WP15H660E61 electronically controlled, turbocharged and intercooled inline six-cylinder diesel engine. Rated output is 485 kW at 1,800 rpm, with maximum torque of 3,200 Nm between 900 and 1,400 rpm.
The engine complies with China VI emissions requirements and is coupled to an imported Allison seven-speed automatic transmission with seven forward gears and two reverse gears. The transmission incorporates a hydraulic torque converter and integrated retarder, providing smooth low-speed movement on site as well as efficient road travel. Fuel capacity is approximately 600 litres.
Upperstructure Engine
The crane upperstructure has its own Weichai WP7G300E473 diesel engine, rated at 221 kW at 2,200 rpm with maximum torque of 1,200 Nm between 1,400 and 1,600 rpm.
The upperstructure engine complies with China non-road Stage IV emissions requirements and has an effective fuel capacity of approximately 335 litres. The separate engine arrangement allows crane operation to be optimized independently of the carrier drivetrain.
Outrigger System
Stability is provided by double-H, two-stage telescopic outriggers. The system uses electro-proportional hydraulic control and includes wireless remote operation and automatic levelling.
Maximum outrigger footprint is approximately 9.4 m longitudinally by 9.6 m transversely. Intermediate extension positions are also available, giving the crane greater flexibility where site width is restricted.
Hydraulic and Control Systems
The SAC5000C8-8 uses a combination of open- and closed-circuit hydraulic systems. Load-sensing, electro-proportional pumps and multi-stage pressure control are used to provide high-speed operation under light load and precise movement under heavy load.
The hoisting and slewing systems use closed hydraulic circuits for smooth response and efficiency, while boom elevation and telescoping use electronically controlled proportional pumps and valves. The crane control network operates through a 24 V CAN-BUS system with real-time monitoring, fault diagnostics and electronically controlled proportional joysticks.
Safety and Monitoring Systems
The crane is equipped with an electronic load moment limiter using a mathematical lifting model and online calibration, with lifting-load indication accuracy stated at approximately ±3%.
Additional safety features include anti-two-block protection, winch rope protection, hydraulic holding and relief valves, wind-speed monitoring, superlift rope-tension protection and dedicated protection programs for jib installation and lifting operations. Multiple cameras and sensors provide the operator with continuous monitoring of key areas around the crane.
SANY’s remote monitoring system can also collect operating parameters and equipment-condition data, supporting remote diagnostics and fleet management.
Transport Dimensions and Weight
The crane has an overall transport length of approximately 17.745 m, a width of 3.0 m and a height of 4.0 m in the stated road configuration.
In the published 72-tonne transport condition, each of the six axles carries approximately 12 tonnes, although this configuration excludes several major crane components, including telescopic boom sections, rear outriggers, hook block, counterweight frame and superlift interface equipment.
Wind Power Applications
The SAC5000C8-8 was developed with dedicated wind-power operating configurations. A special 47 m wind-power boom arrangement is available for maintenance and servicing of wind turbines with hub heights of approximately 100 m or less.
Its combination of a 95 m telescopic boom, 60 m fixed jib, superlift system and high-capacity counterweight arrangement gives the crane the reach and lifting performance required for wind turbine component replacement, nacelle servicing and other high-elevation maintenance work.
Overall Assessment
The SANY SAC5000C8-8 is a high-capacity 500-tonne, six-axle all-terrain crane combining a 95 m eight-section telescopic boom, 60 m fixed jib, 138.5 m maximum lifting height, 143-tonne counterweight system and self-erecting superlift. Its 12×8×12 carrier, dual-engine layout, 70 km/h road speed and flexible outrigger and counterweight configurations make it particularly suitable for heavy industrial lifting, petrochemical construction, infrastructure projects and wind-energy maintenance.
