6. Grove RT9130E-2 (120 ton)
The Grove RT9130E emerged in the mid‑2000s as Grove’s largest capacity rough terrain crane, designed to push the boundaries of what a single‑engine, four‑wheel‑drive rough terrain crane could achieve. Built by Grove (a brand under Manitowoc), the RT9130E was developed for heavy industrial and infrastructure projects where robust lifting capacity had to be combined with excellent off‑road mobility and quick setup. Its 130 USt (120 t metric) rated capacity made it standout among rough terrain cranes of its era, giving contractors a powerful tool for tasks ranging from plant maintenance to structural assembly in confined or uneven terrain.
At the heart of the RT9130E is a five‑section, full‑power MEGAFORM™ boom that extends up to 160 ft (48.8 m), providing significant reach for a crane of its class. An offsettable bi‑fold swingaway jib (often 36 ft–59 ft / 11 m–18 m) increases versatility, allowing operators to address higher elevations and longer radii than would otherwise be possible. Powered by a Cummins QSC8.3L diesel engine paired with a full powershift transmission, the RT9130E combines strong lifting performance with responsive controls and good mobility on rough job sites.
Over time, the RT9130E was succeeded by the RT9130E‑2, which built upon the original with updated controls, ergonomic improvements, and ongoing refinements to meet evolving emissions and productivity standards. Throughout its production life, however, the RT9130E series has remained a favorite in rental fleets and by owners who need a high‑capacity rough terrain crane that can handle demanding lifts while staying nimble in tight or rugged environments.
