On the afternoon of April 5, 2024, a tragic accident occurred at a high-rise construction site in downtown Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where a section of a crane fell while being adjusted to increase its height. This incident resulted in the death of one construction worker and left two others injured.
During a process known as “stepping the crane,” aimed at extending the crane’s height, a section unexpectedly came loose and plummeted to the ground below. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Chief Stephen Gollan detailed in a news conference that the section not only struck a nearby bridge, damaging vehicles, but also caused the death of a worker who fell with it. Additionally, a man and a woman on the ground were injured by the debris and have been hospitalized in stable condition. Another bystander was treated at the scene but refused further medical care.
The bridge over which the crane section fell suffered significant damage, prompting authorities to close it indefinitely to both road and marine traffic pending structural assessments and repairs.
The cause of the crane section’s detachment remains unclear, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, alongside Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, will be conducting a thorough investigation to determine the factors leading to this fatal accident.
