The Grove Model 36 is a highly versatile industrial yard crane with a capacity range of 6 to 7.5 tons (5.5 to 6.8 metric tons). Engineered for use in tight or confined spaces such as industrial plants or storage yards, this crane is characterized by its compact and low-profile design. With a height of just 8 feet (2.44 m), the Model 36 allows for easy operation in areas with low clearance. The counterweight’s swing radius is only 4 feet (1.22 m), which stays within the machine’s perimeter for improved maneuverability in constrained environments.

The Model 36 features a power-telescoping boom with three available lengths: 20 feet (6.1 m), 30 feet (9.14 m), and 42 feet (12.8 m). This offers a horizontal reach of up to 40 feet (12.2 m) and a maximum tip height of 49 feet (14.93 m). The crane is equipped with continuous swing capabilities, providing 140°, 260°, or full 360° rotation, depending on the operational needs. This flexibility makes the Model 36 suitable for lifting tasks in confined spaces where agility and precision are essential.

The crane’s pick-and-carry capacity is substantial, handling loads up to 12,000 lbs (5,443 kg) over the front axle, and is further enhanced by a 65 sq. ft. (6.04 m²) carry deck, which accommodates awkwardly shaped or heavy loads, maximizing its utility in industrial environments.

Powered by a Ford 300 six-cylinder gasoline engine, the Model 36 delivers 118 horsepower at 2,800 RPM, and 222 lb-ft (301 Nm) of torque at 2,200 RPM. The engine is coupled with a four-speed forward and reverse synchromesh manual transmission. The drivetrain includes heavy-duty shafts and joints, with axles featuring front drive with rear steer for optimal handling. This crane operates with a 4×2 drive system, and it has oscillation lockouts for the rear axle to provide additional stability during lifting operations.

For lifting operations, the boom consists of a two-section, full-power telescoping design. The crane is equipped with a Braden planetary winch with a two-speed drum, offering a line speed of up to 220 feet per minute (67 m/min) at no load, and a full drum pull of 5,625 lbs (2,552 kg). The boom elevation is controlled by twin hydraulic cylinders, enabling a boom angle range of 0° to 75°.

The Model 36’s hydraulic system includes a two-section pump with a combined output of 45.5 GPM (172 LPM) at 2,400 RPM, delivering power to both crane functions and steering. The crane’s superstructure is designed for efficient operation, and it features optional equipment such as a 42-foot (12.8 m) boom, a 4-foot (1.27 m) jib, and a hook block capable of lifting up to 8 tons.

Safety and functionality are enhanced with standard features like hydraulic outriggers with independent controls for enhanced stability, 360° non-free swing rotation, and extensive lighting for night or low-visibility operations.
