Product Description
Introduced to the public during the Intermat 2009 exhibition in Paris, the Liebherr MK 88 mobile folding construction crane marked a significant advancement over the earlier MK 80 model. Designed for maximum efficiency and adaptability in urban job sites, the MK 88 is a four-axle mobile crane that redefines the balance between maneuverability, lifting performance, and rapid deployment.
The MK 88 integrates a modern telescopic tower jib design mounted on a slewing platform, allowing for quick assembly and disassembly. This three-section jib, made from high-tensile steel and guided by telescoping rods and cables, can be hydraulically slewed and raised to various fixed angles (0°, 15°, 30°, and 45°), enabling versatile positioning even in constrained locations. The jib can be shortened through rigging adjustments for tighter spaces, further improving its suitability for inner-city construction.
The crane’s chassis is engineered by Liebherr and built with a torsion-resistant steel box-type frame, supported by a hydropneumatic suspension system across all axles. The MK 88 is powered by a 6-cylinder diesel engine, model D936 A7 (Liebherr), generating 300 kW (408 hp) at 1900 rpm and compliant with 97/68/EC emission directives. Power is transmitted via a ZF 12-speed automatic transmission (ZF-12 AS-Tronic), with dual reverse gears and lockable transfer case, delivering travel speeds up to 80 km/h and gradeability up to 60%. The MK 88 features a robust 8×4 drive configuration, with steered axles and electronically managed braking systems including service, parking, and sustained-action brakes.
For crane operation, the MK 88 features a diesel-powered 48.0 kVA generator integrated in the superstructure. It supports the electrical system comprising a PLC-controlled architecture and 24V DC circuits powered by dual 170 Ah batteries. The slewing gear offers variable speeds and active damping, maintaining stability and safety during complex lifts. Trolley travel and hoist operations are driven by frequency converters (5.0 kW and 40 kW), with speeds ranging from 0–70 m/min and micro-movement modes for precise load handling.
The elevating operator’s cab offers exceptional visibility and ergonomics. It includes armrest-integrated master switches, climate control, electronic monitoring, and noise insulation. Additional comfort and functionality are provided by a 1500 W air-conditioning system, reversing and trolley cameras with 7″ color displays, and external lighting for safe nighttime operations. Remote control options further streamline setup and lifting tasks, allowing the operator to work from ground level or other vantage points.
Equipped for self-ballasting, the MK 88 can position its own counterweights without auxiliary cranes, with optional trailers available for transporting additional ballast. The “Plus Package” enhances load capacity using an optimized load chart and configuration flexibility. Other optional features include a hand-held halogen light, rear LED floodlighting, a combination accessory box, and operating-range limiting systems for safety.
Overall, the Liebherr MK 88 is an urban-focused mobile crane that emphasizes fast setup, operational versatility, and enhanced safety. With its compact footprint, powerful performance, and intelligent design, it continues to serve as a go-to solution for projects in dense city environments requiring frequent, high-precision lifts.
