The Giken Silent Piler F301-900 is a modular press-in piling machine designed specifically for 900 mm wide Hat-type steel sheet piles. The F301 was developed around a flexible machine architecture in which the main components and attachments can be changed according to ground conditions and the required installation method. Rather than using separate piling machines for conventional press-in, water-assisted installation and hard-ground work, the F301 can be configured for Standard Mode, Water Jetting Mode or Super Crush Mode, allowing one basic machine platform to cover a wider range of piling applications.

In Standard and Water Jetting configurations, the F301 develops a maximum press-in force of 1,000 kN, equivalent to approximately 102 tonnes, and a maximum extraction force of 1,200 kN, or about 122 tonnes. When configured in Super Crush Mode for harder ground, maximum press-in force is 800 kN, approximately 82 tonnes, while extraction capacity is 900 kN, or about 92 tonnes. The hydraulic pressing system has an 850 mm stroke, with press-in speeds ranging from approximately 2.0 to 43.5 m/min and extraction speeds from 1.5 to 32.3 m/min. Operation is carried out by radio control, while the machine uses Giken’s self-moving principle to advance along the line of previously installed sheet piles.

A major feature of the F301 is its modular construction. In Standard Mode, the machine uses its conventional chuck for general sheet-pile installation. Water Jetting Mode adds equipment that introduces pressurized water close to the pile toe to assist penetration in suitable soil conditions. Super Crush Mode incorporates a pile auger system and a dedicated Super Crush chuck, enabling the machine to penetrate significantly harder ground while retaining the low-noise and low-vibration characteristics associated with hydraulic press-in piling. This arrangement allows the F301 to be adapted to changing geological conditions without replacing the complete piling machine.

For hard-ground operation, the F301 employs Giken’s Hard Ground Press-in Method, in which a pile auger works immediately ahead of or together with the sheet pile. The auger loosens or crushes difficult material while the hydraulic press-in mechanism simultaneously advances the pile. This process is intended for ground containing gravel, cobbles and boulders where conventional static pressing may otherwise be difficult. The system concentrates excavation around the minimum area needed for pile penetration, reducing spoil generation and disturbance to the surrounding ground compared with larger-scale pre-boring methods.

The Super Crush arrangement incorporates several locking functions to improve stability under drilling torque. Locks are provided at the leader mast, chuck and clamps, allowing the machine to resist the rotational forces produced by the auger. This helps maintain alignment between the auger and sheet pile and improves installation accuracy when penetrating hard strata. Giken’s press-in system also makes use of the installed piles as the machine’s reaction base, transferring the hydraulic pressing forces directly through the pile line rather than relying on a large conventional piling rig base.

Machine weight varies considerably according to configuration. In Standard Mode, the main body weighs approximately 11,000 kg. The Water Jetting configuration is approximately 12,250 kg, while the Super Crush configuration is approximately 14,880 kg when equipped with its associated hose-reel arrangement. This modular approach allows unnecessary equipment to be removed when it is not required, reducing transport weight and simplifying the machine for conventional piling operations.

The Super Crush system uses the PA22 pile auger. The auger arrangement can accommodate approximately 24 m maximum applicable pile length in the standard configuration. The auger motor has a mass of about 1,850 kg, while the casing auger assembly is approximately 10,050 kg, giving a combined pile-auger system mass of around 11,900 kg. For Water Jetting operation, the F301 can use the JR29 Piler Jet Reel, suitable for approximately 17 m standard pile length and up to 27 m maximum, with the reel assembly weighing approximately 1,250 kg.

Hydraulic power is provided by the separate crawler-mounted Giken EU300K4 power unit. It uses a diesel engine with three selectable operating modes. Power Mode delivers approximately 265 kW (360 PS) at 1,800 rpm, while Eco Mode reduces output to approximately 235 kW (320 PS) at 1,600 rpm. For operations where full engine output is unnecessary, Super Eco Mode provides approximately 206 kW (280 PS) at 1,400 rpm. The three operating modes allow engine speed and hydraulic output to be matched more closely to the piling workload.

The EU300K4 carries approximately 600 litres of diesel fuel, a 630-litre hydraulic oil reservoir and approximately 38 litres of urea/AdBlue solution. The inclusion of the urea system reflects the power unit’s low-emission diesel configuration. The crawler-mounted unit travels at approximately 1.4 km/h and weighs about 7,550 kg when equipped with 30 m of hydraulic hose. A separate reaction stand with leveling jacks weighs approximately 2,000 kg.

Environmental performance is another important element of the F301 design. The EU300K4 was developed as a low-emission power unit combining efficient diesel combustion with Giken’s hydraulic control system. Engine speed can be reduced through Eco and Super Eco modes, lowering both fuel consumption and operating noise. Noise levels are approximately 63.0 dB(A) in Power Mode, 60.9 dB(A) in Eco Mode and 59.5 dB(A) in Super Eco Mode. The machine also uses Piler Eco Oil and Piler Eco Grease, biodegradable lubricants intended to reduce environmental impact in the event of accidental leakage, together with lead-free TX-free paint.

The F301 also incorporates electronic monitoring and data-management functions through the GIKEN IT System. Machine operating condition, maintenance history and location information can be monitored remotely, supporting troubleshooting and preventive maintenance. Press-in monitoring information can also be recorded for construction management, including data such as press-in force, auger torque and working time. This information can be viewed using compatible computer or tablet equipment and can be retained as part of the installation and quality-control record.
