Mammoet on Linde Upgrade Project in Singapore

linde case study 2

Linde, located at Jurong Island, Singapore is currently undergoing a series of projects to integrate a new complex within its existing facility. As such, Mammoet was hired to lift and install over a hundred components for the plant’s gasification facility upgrade.

The items to be installed included pipe racks, rotating equipment (turbines, generators), e-containers, columns and reactors. Overall, Mammoet employed a range of equipment to support this facility upgrade, including a Demag CC8800-1 Boom Booster, Demag CC2800-1, Kobelco CKE2500 and 110 Mobile cranes, besides SPMTs, plus jacking and skidding systems.

Firstly, the team installed the main substation via a complex rigging method. The setup of this method took the team an entire day before installation of the main substation took place.

18 axle lines of double-wide SPMTs were then used for transportation of multiple cranes on the Jurong Island highway. The APAC regional team then assembled the CC8800-1 with Boom Booster using the assistance of a Demag specialist – this being the first such deployment for the region. The CC8800-1 with Boom Booster was then used to install the 800t methanol wash column before jacking and skidding of the condenser unit took place.

Despite a shortage of manpower due to COVID-19 restrictions, the team overcame this challenge and successfully delivered all required work safely. Moreover, the team executed several activities at the same time to complete the job most efficiently.

There was daily and occasionally hourly planning to ensure maximum productivity by the team. Mammoet colleagues ensured time and cost savings for the client using the Boom Booster kit enhancement instead of employing a gantry system, which would have required more time and cost for mobilization.

Mammoet’s extensive expertise in engineering know-how allows the team to provide solutions to the client for every challenge. Our global network also allows the equipment to be mobilized for the client when required. “Linde highly values Mammoet’s professional and problem-solving working style, and the flexible collaboration within the teams,” commented Florian Paech, Site Director for Linde Engineering.

Mammoet’s commitment for this facility upgrades spans over a year, from 2021 – 2022.

In 2019, Linde signed a long-term agreement with ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. to support the latest multi-billion dollar expansion of the company’s integrated manufacturing complex in Singapore – the single largest sale of gas contract in the history of the newly merged Linde and of its legacy companies.

Linde was to invest US$1.4 billion to expand its existing gasification complex at Jurong Island, integrating it with ExxonMobil’s project to produce and supply additional hydrogen and synthesis gas. However, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a collapse in the oil demand that has put a hold on the projects globally. However, ExxonMobil has committed to Singapore refinery expansion last year.

Mammoet has also been supported by the local crane company, Tiong Woon, which includes the supply of Demag CC2800-1 and other smaller cranes for the project.
