The original Gottwald technical documentation describes the crane as having a diesel-hydraulic drive system and provides separate power units for the road-going carrier and crane superstructure. Its combination of a long lattice main boom, fixed fly-jib option and adjustable luffing-jib configuration allowed the AK 160-53 to cover both conventional heavy lifting and high-reach erection work. The supplied specification does not state the crane’s original introduction or production date, so this should not be inferred from the 2004 document transmission date shown on the pages.
The AK 160-53 is mounted on a five-axle carrier. According to the dimensional drawing on page 3, the crane has an overall transport length of approximately 13.1 m and a width of about 3.0 m. The same drawing gives transport-position axle loads of approximately 6.7 tonnes on each of the first two axles, followed by approximately 11.0, 11.7 and 11.7 tonnes on the remaining three axles. These values correspond closely with the stated overall transport weight of approximately 48 tonnes.
Power for the carrier is provided by an air-cooled four-stroke diesel engine manufactured by Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz. The carrier engine is identified as the Deutz F12L 413, producing 304 PS at 2,500 rpm. Power is transmitted through an Allison HT 750 DRD torque-converter powershift automatic transmission, with a lock-up clutch operating in third, fourth and fifth gears. The published road-speed table gives approximately 0–6.8 km/h in first gear, 17 km/h in second, 26 km/h in third, 38 km/h in fourth and 54 km/h in fifth, with a reverse speed of approximately 6.8 km/h.
The crane superstructure has its own separate air-cooled Deutz diesel engine. This is specified as a Deutz F8L 413, rated at 210 PS at 2,650 rpm. The use of separate carrier and crane engines allowed the upper structure to operate independently from the road-travel drivetrain. The period specification does not provide a modern exhaust-emissions classification, so no Stage or Tier designation should be applied to these engines on the basis of this document.
In its standard lattice-boom configuration, the AK 160-53 can be assembled with a main boom ranging from 11.5 m to 74.5 m. The working-range diagram on page 4 illustrates the successive boom lengths from the short base configuration through to the maximum 74.5 m arrangement. Load charts on the following pages cover the different boom lengths and working radii, with capacities depending on boom length, radius and operating sector. The crane’s maximum 125-tonne rating is associated with the short-boom heavy-lift configuration rather than the full-length boom arrangement.
For applications requiring additional reach, Gottwald also provided a 10.0 m fixed fly jib. The technical data states that this attachment could be used with main-boom configurations from 11.5 to 65.5 m. The document notes that the drawing and detailed technical data for this fixed-jib arrangement were available separately, so the supplied specification does not provide the same level of load-chart detail for this configuration as it does for the main boom.
A more extensive high-reach arrangement converts the main boom into a tower supporting an adjustable luffing jib. In this configuration, the main-boom tower can be assembled from 16.0 to 55.5 m, while the adjustable jib ranges from 16.0 to 61.0 m. At the longest published combination, the structural boom and jib lengths therefore total approximately 116.5 m, although the actual hook height depends on the operating angles and radius. The working-range diagram on page 10 shows the crane operating at hook heights approaching roughly 120 m in the longest luffing configurations.
Pages 11 to 14 provide separate load charts for the adjustable jib, covering a number of tower and jib combinations. The luffing-jib lengths shown include approximately 16.0, 20.5, 25.0, 29.5, 34.0, 38.5, 43.0, 47.5, 52.0, 56.5 and 61.0 m. This modular arrangement allowed the AK 160-53 to be tailored to the lifting height and working radius required on a particular project rather than operating with a single fixed long-boom arrangement.
Crane operating speeds are continuously variable. The specification lists the main hoisting systems at up to approximately 38 m/min for single-line operation with loads up to the stated limit, while a no-load high-speed function allows rope speeds of up to approximately 120 m/min. Slewing speed is continuously variable up to approximately 0.6 rpm. For boom or jib operation, the published rope speeds include approximately 20 m/min in normal operation and up to approximately 40 m/min in the faster operating range. The document specifically notes that intermediate speeds are possible depending on load.
The crane is operated primarily from the superstructure cab, from which the crane movements are controlled. The carrier cab is used for road travel, steering and axle-locking functions. The AK 160-53 is fitted with 14.00-24, 22 PR tyres, and the outrigger system provides a support base of approximately 6.0 × 6.8 m. Pages 8 and 9 of the specification additionally provide outrigger and tyre-reaction data together with a plan view identifying the relevant support positions around the carrier.
Overall, the Gottwald AK 160-53 combines a 125-tonne lifting capacity, five-axle road-going carrier and a particularly versatile range of lattice-boom arrangements. Its standard main boom extends to 74.5 m, while the adjustable luffing-jib system combines a tower of up to 55.5 m with a jib of up to 61.0 m for considerably greater lifting height.
