Tadano TR500XL-3

The Tadano TR-500XL-3 is a powerful 50 US-ton (45.4 metric ton) rough terrain crane, designed for demanding lifting operations in off-road environments. It features a four-section, full-power partially synchronized telescopic boom with hexagonal box construction. The boom extends from 34.8 ft to 110.6 ft (10.6 m to 33.7 m), providing significant reach and versatility for lifting tasks. Additionally, the crane comes with a two-stage telescoping lattice jib, which can be extended to 32.2 ft (9.8 m) or 56.1 ft (17.1 m) with offset options of 5° or 30°, allowing for higher and more precise lifts.

The crane’s hydraulic system is driven by dual variable piston pumps, which independently control all major crane functions such as boom lift, extension, swing, and hoisting operations. It includes a tandem gear pump for steering and other auxiliary systems. The hydraulic reservoir holds 195 gallons (740 liters), ensuring continuous and efficient operation of the crane. The swing system provides a full 360° continuous rotation at 2.4 rpm, allowing for smooth and precise load positioning.

The TR-500XL-3 is equipped with both a main and auxiliary hoist, each powered by hydraulic axial piston motors with planetary speed reducers. The main hoist has a drum capacity of 905 ft (276 m) of 3/4-inch (19 mm) wire rope, with a maximum permissible line pull of 14,272 lbs (6,474 kg) and a line speed of up to 525 ft/min (160 m/min). The auxiliary hoist offers similar capabilities, allowing for efficient dual-lifting operations.

For stability, the crane features four independently controlled hydraulic outriggers with beam and jack designs. The outrigger beams extend to a maximum span of 23 ft 7-1/2 in (7.2 m) and retract to within 10 ft 10-1/2 in (3.32 m). The outriggers are equipped with holding valves for added safety, and they include self-storing outrigger pads to minimize setup time.

Powered by a Mitsubishi 6D16-TLEA direct-injection diesel engine, the TR-500XL-3 delivers 247 hp (184 kW) at 2,800 rpm and a maximum torque of 521 ft-lbs (72 kg-m) at 1,400 rpm. This engine provides ample power for crane functions as well as travel, with the crane reaching speeds of up to 25 mph (40 km/h). The transmission is an electronically controlled full-automatic system with six forward gears and two reverse gears, ensuring smooth and efficient mobility on and off-road.

Operator safety and control are paramount in the TR-500XL-3, which is equipped with Tadano’s AML-L load moment indicator system. This system continuously monitors the crane’s load conditions, providing real-time information on boom length, boom angle, jib offset, and load radius, ensuring safe lifting operations. The system also includes a warning buzzer and visual alerts for potential overload situations. The operator’s cab is designed for comfort and efficiency, featuring a fully enclosed steel construction with sliding door access, shatter-resistant windows, and an adjustable high-back seat with seatbelt.

The TR-500XL-3 offers three steering modes—front-wheel, four-wheel coordinated, and crab steering—allowing for superior maneuverability in tight or rugged job sites. The crane rides on 29.5-25-22PR (OR) tires, providing excellent traction and stability.
