Terex RT 230

The Terex RT230 is a robust 30-ton capacity rough terrain crane engineered for heavy lifting in off-road environments. With a 4-section, full-power mechanically synchronized boom, the RT230 offers a reach from 30 ft to 94 ft (9.14 m to 28.65 m). The optional one or two-section jib extends the maximum height to 120 ft (36.57 m) or 147 ft (44.8 m), providing flexibility for various job site demands. The boom elevation range spans from -4° to 76°, allowing for optimal positioning during lifts.

The crane is equipped with a powerful hoist system featuring a grooved drum with a storage capacity of 598 ft (182 m). It operates with two speed ratios, capable of achieving a line speed of 297 ft/min (low range) or 475 ft/min (high range) without load on the 6th layer. The rotation-resistant 18×19 wire rope offers a maximum line pull of 9,000 lbs (4,082 kg) and a breaking strength of 35,800 lbs (16,239 kg), ensuring safe and reliable lifting performance.

The RT230 is powered by a Cummins QSB4.5 4-cylinder diesel engine, delivering 130 hp at 2,200 RPM and 457 ft-lbs (620 Nm) of torque at 1,500 RPM. This engine meets Tier 4i emission standards and is equipped with an intercooler for efficient performance. The fuel tank capacity is 50 gallons (189 liters), providing ample range for extended operations. An alternative Tier 3 engine option is available, offering the same power and torque output.

The crane’s hydraulic system is driven by tandem pumps, delivering 39 GPM for boom lift and telescope functions and 21 GPM for power steering, outriggers, and swing at 3,500 psi and 2,500 psi respectively. An additional single pump powers the hoist system at 53 GPM. The hydraulic system also includes a 94-gallon (356-liter) reservoir, with suction and return filters for optimal oil cleanliness.

In terms of vehicle performance, the RT230 is designed for rugged conditions, equipped with a 6×6 powershift transmission and full-time 4WD. It has a maximum travel speed of 24.5 mph (39.4 km/h), and its transmission includes six forward gears and one reverse. The front axle is rigid-mounted, while the rear axle oscillates up to 10 inches (254 mm) to adapt to uneven terrain. Steering modes include front-wheel steering, four-wheel coordinated steering, and four-wheel crab steering, with an optional rear-wheel steering package available for enhanced control.

Stability during lifting operations is ensured by the crane’s outriggers, which feature a 24-inch (610 mm) diameter pad and provide a total area of 254 square inches (1638 cm²). The crane also includes a hydraulic power steering system, disc brakes on all wheels, and a hydraulic oil cooler on the carrier for efficient operation under heavy-duty conditions.

The cab of the RT230 offers operator comfort and functionality with a sliding door, tinted safety glass, a six-way adjustable seat, and armrest-mounted dual-axis electro-proportional joysticks for precise control. The dashboard features switches for outrigger operation, while a graphic interface provides essential load data for safe operation. Optional cab features include air conditioning, a heater, work lights, and a rotating beacon for additional safety in low-visibility conditions.
