Product Description

The Demag AC 500-2 is a heavy-lift all-terrain crane with a maximum capacity of 500 tons, engineered for high performance in large-scale construction, plant maintenance, and infrastructure projects. The crane’s carrier features a 16x8x14 drive/steering system with a Demag-built frame made of high-strength fine-grain steel. It includes hydraulic outriggers with full horizontal and vertical extension capability, providing 360° continuous rotation and automatic leveling.

The carrier is powered by a water-cooled DaimlerChrysler OM 502 LA diesel engine, producing 480 kW (653 hp) at 1800 rpm, with 2800 Nm of torque. It is EURO MOT 3a, Tier 3, and CARB compliant. The transmission is a ZF TC-Tronic, 12-speed automated system with torque converter and integrated hydraulic retarder. Suspension is fully hydropneumatic, and all 16 wheels are 14.00 R 25.

In the superstructure, the crane uses a DaimlerChrysler OM 906 LA diesel engine, rated at 205 kW (279 hp) at 2200 rpm with 1100 Nm of torque. The hydraulic system operates with 5 independent hydraulic circuits, supporting hoisting, slewing, boom elevation, and auxiliary functions. Hoisting is driven by axial piston variable displacement motors with planetary gear reducers and integrated brakes.

The main boom consists of a base plus four telescopic sections fabricated from fine-grain structural steel, with a telescoping length range and optional extensions. Boom control is electric via two self-centering levers with pilot valves. For added lifting height and flexibility, optional jibs include:

  • Fixed jib: 8.4 – 62.4 m (with 0°, 20°, and 40° offsets)
  • Luffing jib: 24 – 90 m, with 4.5 m adapter, two pendant mats, and required hoist II
  • Main boom extension: 30 m section for fixed jib mounting

The crane can be equipped with a Superlift attachment, which deploys the boom suspension system at 0°, 30°, or 60° angles, offering increased load capacity. It also includes a counterweight system of 100 t standard, plus optional 80 t counterweight integrated into the superstructure. Counterweight positioning and boom functions are computer-controlled for safe and optimal setup.

Inside the operator cab, comfort and visibility are prioritized. The steel cab includes a sliding door, ergonomic seat, large windscreen, armored glass, air conditioning, and a full set of crane control instruments. Safety systems include an electronic load indicator with large graphic and analog display, sealed keyboard, and limit switches for hoisting and telescoping. Integrated control aids monitor boom angle, radius, tip height, and load chart display.

The Demag AC 500-2 also includes support for independent rear axle steering, improving its maneuverability in confined work areas. Designed with transport and modular assembly in mind, it stands as a top performer in the 500-ton all-terrain crane segment.
