Product Description

The Liebherr MK 88-4.1 was developed as an evolution of the MK 88 series, refining the concept of a mobile construction crane that bridges the gap between conventional mobile cranes and top-slewing tower cranes. Introduced to meet increasing demands for reach, hook height, and operational efficiency in congested urban environments, the MK 88-4.1 focuses on delivering tower-crane working characteristics with minimal setup time and excellent mobility. Mounted on a purpose-built four-axle carrier, the crane maintains compact transport dimensions while providing a generous working range once erected.

In its standard configuration, the MK 88-4.1 is equipped with a lattice jib offering a maximum length of 45.0 metres. The jib can be operated horizontally or set at fixed angles of 15°, 30°, and 45°, allowing the crane to adapt to varying site requirements. At maximum jib length and horizontal position, the crane achieves a working radius of 45 metres, while steeper jib angles significantly increase hook height. With the jib raised, the MK 88-4.1 reaches hook heights of approximately 59 metres, making it well suited for multi-storey residential, commercial, and mixed-use developments. The crane has a maximum lifting capacity of 8,000 kg at short radii, with capacities at maximum outreach typically in the range of around 1,800 to 1,900 kg, depending on configuration and outrigger setup.

A defining feature of the MK 88-4.1 is its fully automatic, one-man erection system. The telescopic lattice tower and jib are erected at the push of a button, following a very tight and high assembly curve. This allows the crane to be set up in confined spaces with minimal rear clearance, a key advantage on inner-city sites where space is limited and surrounding buildings restrict assembly options. Once erected, the crane can remain standing when out of operation without the need for dismantling, improving overall site efficiency.

All crane movements on the MK 88-4.1 are electrically driven using frequency-controlled motors. The slewing system provides smooth, stepless rotation with a maximum slewing speed of approximately 0.8 to 1.0 rpm, depending on operating mode, ensuring precise load handling. The hoist mechanism is frequency-controlled and equipped with a precision positioning mode, offering lifting speeds of up to around 75 m/min for efficient material handling combined with accurate placement. Trolley travel along the jib is also steplessly controlled, reaching speeds of roughly 70 m/min. Integrated electronic wind load monitoring and automatic load sway damping enhance safety and operator comfort, particularly at large radii.

The crane is fitted with a four-point outrigger system with fully hydraulic horizontal and vertical extension, automatic leveling, and electronic inclination monitoring. The outrigger base can be adjusted to suit site constraints, allowing the crane to work effectively even on restricted footprints. Thanks to its favorable center of gravity, the MK 88-4.1 can also be repositioned slowly on site while erected, provided operating conditions and manufacturer guidelines are observed.

The carrier is powered by a Liebherr diesel engine driving the undercarriage, paired with an automated multi-speed transmission that enables a maximum road speed of approximately 80 km/h. This allows rapid relocation between sites without the need for transport vehicles. For crane operation, electrical power is supplied by an onboard diesel generator, with the option to connect to an external 400 V site power supply for quieter, low-emission operation in noise-sensitive areas.

An elevating operator’s cab is available, designed as a lift cabin that can be raised or lowered along the tower to maintain optimal visibility of the load and working area. The cab is fully glazed, climate controlled, and integrated with Liebherr’s electronic monitoring systems, providing real-time information on crane status, configuration, and safety parameters.

Overall, the Liebherr MK 88-4.1 is a highly versatile mobile construction crane that delivers an effective balance between reach, lifting performance, and mobility. Its fast erection, compact footprint, and precise electrically driven crane motions make it particularly well suited for urban construction, refurbishment projects, and sites where time, space, and flexibility are critical.
