Manitowoc 3900T Series 2

Debuting as an upgraded evolution of Manitowoc’s legacy lattice boom cranes, the 3900T Series 2 combines brute lifting power with field-proven engineering. It’s rated for a maximum capacity of 165 US tons and is outfitted with the No. 9A Hammerhead Boom, which allows a wide range of boom configurations including inserts from 5 ft to 40 ft and jibs such as No. 123 and 124, extending the system’s reach and lifting options. The crane’s full lift assembly—including boom, rigging, gantry, and carrier—weighs in at over 235,000 lbs.

At its core, the crane is powered by a standard Cummins LTA-10-C325 diesel engine producing 310 HP at 2000 RPM. Optionally, a Detroit Diesel 8V-71N engine rated at 278 HP is also available. The upperworks utilize the VICON power system, a patented variable torque converter transmission, which enables smooth, variable-speed hoisting and boom control. Hoist drums are air-controlled with manual fallback options, and the load is handled through a series of antifriction-mounted hook rollers, powered independently from an A-frame-mounted boom hoist.

Carrier-wise, it’s purpose-built on a dedicated 12×6 chassis with heavy-duty fabricated steel construction. It includes features like a ring gear and 105¾” roller path, hydraulic outriggers, and 10.00×20 heavy-duty tires. The main transmission is an Eaton RT100-11613 13-speed unit with an auxiliary Eaton-Fuller AT1202 3-speed box, providing ample torque options for a variety of terrains. Air-actuated brakes and a full complement of gauges, indicators, and a comfort-enhanced operator cab round off its highly serviceable field design.

In terms of lifting control and safety, the crane is equipped with full VICON power lowering, optional dual-drum power lowering, independent boom hoist, mechanical counterweight removal, and a swing system using both planetary gearboxes and disc brakes for steady motion control.
