Key Features & Benefits

The Potain MCT 1005 M50, introduced in January 2023, represents a significant advancement in Manitowoc’s tower crane offerings, particularly tailored for high-capacity lifting in the dense and fast-growing construction environments of Southeast Asia and other emerging markets. This flat top (topless) tower crane is the largest ever produced at the Zhangjiagang manufacturing facility in China and is purpose-built to manage large-scale structural components with unmatched efficiency and flexibility.

The MCT 1005 M50 features a maximum lifting capacity of 50 tonnes, with a wide array of reach configurations. Its maximum working radius extends to 80 meters, where it can still handle an impressive tip load of 8 tonnes. The jib can be assembled from 11 modular sections of 5 m or 10 m each, giving it flexible reach configurations ranging from 20 m to 80 m. When fitted with the minimum 20 m jib, the crane lifts the full 50 tonnes at the tip. Similarly, with the full 80 m jib, the crane can lift 50 tonnes within a radius of 3.5 to 16.8 m. The 45 m jib option, commonly preferred by contractors, delivers a strong 24.8 t tip load.

Supporting these heavy loads are three different counterjib configurations that allow the crane to be adjusted for job site constraints. For jibs up to 45 m, a 15 m counterjib is used; up to 55 m requires a 17.5 m counterjib; and longer jibs of 60 m to 80 m use a 20 m counterjib. This configuration flexibility ensures the crane can operate efficiently and safely even in tight working environments or near other cranes.

The crane is driven by Potain’s latest RVF 174 Optima+ slewing system, which provides slewing speeds of 0 to 0.7 rpm, ensuring smooth and precise rotation even under full load. Trolley movement is handled by the Potain 25 DVFC 25 frequency-controlled system, providing excellent horizontal load transport with minimal sway and high precision. The hoisting mechanism is the high-performance 220 LVFC 125 Optima, supporting line speeds up to 88 m/min and allowing over 1,070 m of rope on the drum, which is crucial for tall structures and multi-layer lifts.

Structurally, the crane is based on the K850 mast system, using 2.45 m x 2.45 m tower sections that enable a freestanding under-hook height of up to 69.7 meters. This mast can be climbed to heights exceeding 218 meters when anchored. The V140S Vision cabin crowns the crane, designed for operator comfort and control. It features panoramic tinted glass, integrated heating, optional air conditioning, a sun visor, and wipers to enhance visibility and ergonomics.

Transport logistics are a standout advantage for such a large crane. The complete top-slewing structure, including the jib, counterjib, and machinery deck, can be delivered to site in as few as 11 trucks, underscoring the crane’s modular design and ease of assembly.

With a combination of high lifting capacity, efficient transport, modular adaptability, and operator-friendly design, the Potain MCT 1005 M50 sets a new benchmark for topless tower cranes in modern heavy construction.
