Product Description

The American 9270 crawler crane, a mainstay in heavy lifting operations during the late 20th century, combines simplicity, strength, and reliability in a package weighing approximately 299,600 lbs in its standard configuration with the 70-foot 77S hammerhead boom. Built for multipurpose use including lifting, clam shell, and dragline work, the 9270 remains relevant in many applications due to its rugged mechanical design and solid performance.

Its structural dimensions include a crawler bearing length of 21 feet, crawler track length of 23 feet 9 inches, and crawler tumbler center spacing of 19 feet 8 inches. Depending on the selected tread shoe width—44″, 38″, or 50″—the overall width can vary from 15 feet 9 inches (retracted) to 19 feet 3 inches (extended), enhancing adaptability across different terrains.

Power and performance-wise, the crane operates with a rated swing speed of 2.28 RPM and a travel speed of 0.8 MPH, showcasing its slow but deliberate mobility characteristic of its class. The line pull capacity varies by drum:

  • Crane-clam hoist: 40,000 lbs
  • Magnet/drag hoist: 33,000 lbs
  • Drag pull-in: up to 45,000 lbs
  • Third drum: 15,000 or 21,000 lbs

With high line speeds up to 200 FPM for magnet hoisting and 192 FPM for the third drum, it allows relatively efficient cycle work in materials handling.

The ground pressure is rated at 13.9 PSI when using 44” shoes, which ensures decent stability and distribution over soft or uneven surfaces.

Component-wise, the crane is designed for easier field disassembly and transport, with removable parts including a 96,800 lb counterweight, 24,200 lb carbody, 63,760 lb side frames, and other modular elements like the hammerhead, A-frame, and boom sections.

Even decades after its introduction, the American 9270 remains a trusted machine for contractors needing a powerful, mechanical crawler crane. It is particularly suited for dredging, pile driving, and material loading work, where its classic design offers simplicity in maintenance and rugged field durability.
