Product Description
The Terex Challenger 3180 is a powerful, all-terrain mobile crane designed with a maximum lifting capacity of 60 tons. Unveiled at the 2011 Vertikal Days plant show, this crane represents a shift in Terex’s naming convention, now based on load moment rating instead of maximum rated capacity. The Challenger 3180 replaces the AC60 model in Terex’s lineup, offering a more efficient and flexible lifting solution.
With a maximum lifting capacity of 37.9 tons at a 4-meter radius, the Challenger 3180 features a single-cylinder telescopic boom that extends up to 50 meters, along with a 16-meter jib extension. This provides impressive reach and versatility for both urban and industrial applications. The crane is equipped with a fully integrated counterweight system, allowing it to carry a maximum of 12.1 tons of counterweight while remaining road-legal with axle loads up to 15 tons.
Designed for complete self-containment, the Challenger 3180 requires no additional support vehicles, making it ideal for use in markets like the UK, where road regulations permit axle loads of up to 15 tons. Its 3-axle design enhances maneuverability and reduces transport costs, while its strong mobility makes it efficient on job sites where space is limited.
For regions with stricter axle load limits, the Terex Challenger 3160 is a variant with a lighter boom and reduced lifting capacity, offering similar features tailored to comply with local regulations. The ergonomic design of the cab, along with the intuitive controls, ensures comfortable and efficient operation for the crane operator.
With the Challenger 3180, Terex has created a highly versatile and capable crane that caters to both domestic and international markets, providing optimal performance in demanding construction and industrial environments.
Milestones
First Delivery Of Challenger 3180 In Italy And UK
UK-based crane rental company, NMT has taken delivery of the first Challenger 3180 in the UK in 2012. The crane has been fitted with outrigger base monitoring, display on the LMI system, allowing surveillance of each outrigger beam for visual comparison with the programmed outrigger values. The crane has also been fitted with an outrigger load monitoring system, another option selected by NMT, which the system provides constant input for the load on each outrigger jack to inform the crane operator of ground pressure whilst the crane is in use. A radio remote control has been included as well.
In the same year, Genoa-based lifting and transport company Vernazza Autogru S.r.l has also acquired the first Challenger 3180 in Italy – together with Challenger 3160. The owners have given the Challengers unique body paintwork with Challenger 3160 to resemble a zebra and Challenger 3180 like a tiger.
Apart from the visual effect that highlights the design of the crane, Vernazza Autogru also uses it as a distinctive added value from a marketing standpoint because it gives the crane rental company brand recognition.
