Key Features & Benefits

The Link-Belt HC-218A is a high-capacity lattice boom truck crane, designed to deliver exceptional performance and flexibility in heavy-duty lifting operations. Built on a robust 8×4 drive FMC carrier with a 260-inch (6.60 m) wheelbase, it features heat-treated alloy steel main frame members and a machined turntable bearing surface that ensures stability and durability during operation. The crane’s turntable uses an integral external tooth swing gear and is bolted securely to the carrier, allowing precise and smooth rotational control. The Ross HPS70 power-assisted hydraulic steering system operates through an 18-inch (46 cm) diameter steering wheel, delivering responsive handling under all job site conditions.

The HC-218A is powered by reliable diesel engine options, either the GM 6V-92TA (318 bhp @ 2,100 rpm) or the Cummins NTC-290 (290 bhp @ 2,100 rpm), both designed for sustained heavy operation. These engines are coupled with a 15-speed Eaton RTO-915 transmission and a 2-speed Eaton AT-1202 auxiliary gearbox, providing a total of 30 speed options for road or job site travel. This flexible drivetrain allows for effective maneuvering on various terrains and optimal fuel efficiency. A 75-gallon (284-liter) fuel tank supports extended operation times between refueling.

The load hoisting system uses tandem gear-driven wire rope drums for front, rear, and optional third line operations. Each drum is equipped with large diameter brakes (34” for main drums, 28” for optional third), external contracting bands, and Speed-O-Matic 2-shoe hydraulic clutches. Optional planetary drive units can be installed to provide higher or lower hoisting speeds, depending on job requirements. The boom hoist drum, rated at 12¼” root diameter, is also hydraulically actuated with a locking pawl for safe, controlled boom positioning. For additional control, boom lowering clutches and planetary lowering units can be included, giving operators both high speed and fine precision when lowering.

The crane’s boom and jib configurations are among its key features. The basic boom consists of two 20-foot (6.10 m) tubular steel sections with round chord construction and pin connections. From there, it can be extended using 10’, 15’, 20’, 30’, or 40’ sections, allowing for boom lengths from 40 feet (12.19 m) up to 200 feet (60.96 m) in open-throat configurations, or 210 feet (64.01 m) with tapered tips. The crane accommodates both hammerhead and tapered boom tips, with the hammerhead requiring a 5-foot tapered section to complete its configuration. The jib is a 30-foot (9.14 m) two-piece tubular section, with a base and top, and offers extensions up to 60 feet (18.29 m), allowing boom+jib combinations up to 270 feet (82.3 m) total.

To ensure lifting stability and support at extended lengths, the HC-218A includes boom midpoint suspension pendants and boom stops. The boom live mast, with hydraulic cylinders, supports the boom bridle and pendant system, allowing for easy boom erection and lowering. Boom mast extensions allow the crane to reach a height of 24 feet (7.32 m) when needed. Boom folding equipment is available as an option for easier transport and setup.

The crane’s cab and controls are designed for operator comfort and precision. The modular environmental cab is offset and fully enclosed, insulated from engine heat and vibration, and includes a cushioned seat, rest arms, and ergonomic controls. The full instrument panel includes gauges for engine temperature, oil pressure, fuel, air, and electrical systems, along with an air pressure warning buzzer, key ignition, push-start button, and 2-speed electric windshield wiper. Optional lighting systems and AC power are also available.

Additional features include a robust gantry mounted at the rear of the machinery deck for boom support, and a gantry bail with a 12″ root diameter sheave for 16-part boom hoist rope reeving. The crane also supports optional counterweights: 21,000 lbs (A counterweight) and 12,000 lbs (B counterweight), which can be quickly mounted or removed using hydraulic controls. The machine is equipped with hook blocks, boom stops, boom mast stops, load hoist rope deflector rollers, and jib mast assemblies—all critical for safe and efficient lifting operations.

In summary, the Link-Belt HC-218A is a highly capable 100-ton class lattice boom truck crane that combines power, precision, and versatility. With its rugged construction, modular boom system, flexible hoisting options, and operator-focused controls, it is engineered to perform in a wide range of lifting scenarios, from building construction to industrial infrastructure projects. Its adaptability, transportability, and comprehensive safety systems make it an indispensable tool for contractors requiring reliable heavy lifting in the field.
