Key Features & Benefits
The P&H 955A-LC crawler crane, introduced in the mid-20th century by Harnischfeger Corporation, is designed as a durable and high-performing lifting solution for construction and industrial operations. This crane has a standard lifting capacity of 75 tons, which increases to 82 tons with the use of the maximum counterweight configuration. It features a lattice boom made of alloy steel angles, bolted in two sections for a basic length of 50 feet and extendable to 70 feet. The boom setup includes an open throat with two pendant sheaves and two boom point sheaves mounted on anti-friction bearings. Depending on the setup, it supports 6-part or 10-part reeving, with 10-part being standard for the longer boom length.
For lifting operations, the crane comes equipped with either a 25-ton single-sheave hook block or an 82-ton four-sheave hook block, depending on the configuration. Power-controlled load lowering is managed through a planetary system, ensuring safe and efficient handling of heavy loads.
The upper machinery of the 955A-LC can be powered by a Cummins NHRS-6-1 or NHRS-5-1 diesel engine, both 6-cylinder configurations. These engines provide outputs ranging from 210 HP at 1700 RPM to 220 HP at 1800 RPM, with torque converter or direct power take-off options. The hoist drum uses an independent planetary gear system and supports a lifting speed of 80 feet per minute and lowering speed of 50 feet per minute. The gantry is of fixed high type as standard, with a folding gantry available as an option.
The crane’s swing motion is powered through dual Magnetorque clutches, with a swing speed of 3.5 RPM. The lower machinery utilizes a roller chain track system, with crawler shoes designed for durability and minimal ground pressure. Each crawler operates via a double-acting spring-loaded mechanism, which can be engaged manually or through the hydraulic jack system. The entire machine rides on 24 rollers and uses external cut teeth gearing.
In terms of operational weight, the standard crane configuration including the hook block weighs approximately 147,980 lbs, while the configuration with maximum counterweight comes in at 162,525 lbs. Counterweight alone accounts for up to 46,470 lbs. Hydraulic systems, swing locks, and auxiliary power take-offs were also available as options, making the 955A-LC adaptable to a wide range of lifting needs in construction and heavy industry environments.
