Potain MCT 805 M40
Launched in April 2022, the Potain MCT 805 M40 is a flat top tower crane engineered for high-capacity applications in emerging markets. With up to 40 t lifting capacity, an 80 m jib, and efficient modular components, the MCT 805 delivers rapid assembly, excellent transportability, and high versatility. It was the largest topless tower crane built at Manitowoc’s Zhangjiagang factory at launch and is based on the successful European MDT 809 model.

Product Description
The Potain MCT 805 M40 flat top tower crane is designed as a global workhorse for high-capacity lifting projects, built to serve markets across Asia, Australia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. Introduced in April 2022, it is the largest topless tower crane ever produced at Manitowoc’s Zhangjiagang, China facility. The crane is derived from the proven MDT 809 M40 in the European range, sharing much of its structural DNA and performance efficiency but optimized for greater economy and rapid erection.
The MCT 805 M40 is offered in two capacity configurations: 32 tonnes (M32) and 40 tonnes (M40), each with a maximum 80-meter jib and up to 84 meters under-hook height. This generous working height is made possible through the reinforced K-mast system, utilizing new base designs including an 8-meter cross-shaped base that performs comparably to conventional 10-meter bases. The modular mast system allows for a mix of 10 m, 5 m, and 3.33 m sections to fine-tune hook height as needed.
Performance at jib end is notably strong. The M40 version supports up to 7.5 tonnes at the 80 m tip, enabled by a counter-jib no longer than 27.3 m. It can lift the full 40 t capacity up to 18.5 m, while the M32 handles 32 t at over 22 m. This balance of capacity and radius is crucial for high-density urban sites where space is restricted but load demands are rising.
Hoisting operations are supported by advanced frequency-controlled winches. The M40 is typically paired with the 270 LVF 100 Optima winch, which can lift 3.5 t at a speed of 162 m/min, with a maximum rope capacity of 1,063 meters. Users can select between two-fall and four-fall reeving to match site needs — prioritizing either speed or heavy lifting.
The MCT 805 M40 is also distinguished by its economical transportation and setup. Whereas most 40 t cranes need around 14 containers, the rotating section of the MCT 805 can be transported in just 10 to 11 loads. All jib components fit inside standard containers, thanks to their compact dimensions (only 1.55 m wide and under 2.5 m high). Setup is similarly efficient, with the entire crane able to be erected to 50 meters with an 80-meter jib in under three days — a time-saving advantage rare in this class.
Key to its fast setup is the crane’s simplified base and connection systems. The 8-meter cross base consists of a main girder and two half-cross girders pinned together, offering quick alignment and anchoring. Jib sections can be assembled in 5-meter increments either at ground level or in the air. The folding counter-jib and pre-wired tower head with the V140S Vision cab require no disassembly between jobs, further streamlining mobilization.
Overall, the MCT 805 M40 offers unmatched lifting power, transport flexibility, and setup speed for a crane of its size, making it a premier solution for contractors who need heavy-duty lifting in confined, high-demand sites across the globe.
