Grove GMK3055
The Grove GMK3055 is a 55-ton class all terrain crane mounted on a compact 3-axle (6x4x6) carrier, featuring a 6-section TWIN-LOCK™ boom extending from 9.6 m to 43.0 m and reaching a maximum lifting height of 45.5 meters. Powered by a 260 kW Mercedes-Benz engine, it offers superior roadability and off-road mobility, supported by independent suspension, MEGATRAK™ leveling, and full electronic crane control systems

Product Description
The Grove GMK3055 is a compact yet powerful 55-ton all terrain crane designed for both urban and rugged job site applications. First introduced at Bauma 2004, it quickly became known for its excellent lifting range, maneuverability, and technological advancements. Built on a 3-axle (6x4x6) carrier chassis, the crane offers high road speeds and strong terrain adaptability, and was eventually phased out in 2015 in favor of the GMK3060.
At the core of the GMK3055 is its 6-section TWIN-LOCK™ hydraulic boom, which extends from 9.6 m to 43.0 m, providing a full boom lifting height of up to 45.5 meters. Boom elevation is managed by a single hydraulic cylinder with a safety valve, with an elevation range from –2.7° to +82°. The crane also supports bi-fold swingaway jibs of 8.7 m to 15 m, with both manual and hydraulic offset capabilities (0°, 20°, 40°), expanding the operational reach when needed.
Powering the carrier is a Mercedes-Benz OM501LA diesel engine, delivering 260 kW (354 hp) at 1,800 rpm and 1,730 Nm of torque at 1,080 rpm. This engine complies with EUROMOT / EPA / CARB on-road emissions standards. The power is transmitted through a ZF AS-TRONIC automated transmission (12 forward, 2 reverse gears), and the drivetrain includes a single-speed transfer case with inter-axle differential lock.
The crane runs on MEGATRAK™ independent suspension, featuring hydropneumatic springing with longitudinal and transverse level control. All three axles are steered, with axles 1, 2, and 3 being both steered and driven, allowing for tight maneuverability even on constrained sites. The steering system is dual-circuit with emergency backup and separate controls for the 3rd axle line, supporting both crab and coordinated steering.
The hydraulic system is robust, comprising two open circuit pumps with one axial piston variable displacement pump (with load sensing) and one gear pump. A thermostatically controlled oil cooler ensures consistent performance. The hydraulic oil tank has a 600-liter capacity.
For crane operations, Grove integrates its ECOS control system, enabling simultaneous multi-function operation through CAN-BUS electronics, with full data feedback and crane diagnostics displayed on a graphic interface. Safety is assured with a load moment indicator, anti-two block warning, and automatic function cut-out.
The superstructure includes an aluminum cab with full tilting function (approx. 20° tilt), adjustable seating with integrated controls, ergonomic instrumentation, and direct access to operating and driving systems. On the carrier side, the two-man cab features pneumatic suspension, integrated controls, engine-dependent and optional independent heater systems, and full instrumentation for highway and off-road travel.
Additional equipment options include:
- 6x6x6 drivetrain
- Electric driveline retarder
- Various tire size options (16.00 R25, 20.5 R25)
- Engine-independent water heater with engine pre-heater
The counterweight system includes a 7.6-ton standard package, hydraulically removable from the crane cab, and additional 4.0 tonnes available as an option (totaling 11.6 tonnes).
In summary, the Grove GMK3055 combines compact dimensions, excellent lifting height, and all-terrain versatility, supported by advanced crane control systems and operator-focused cab designs. Though now replaced by the GMK3060, the GMK3055 remains a solid and reliable choice in the 55-ton class category.
