Product Description

Introduced as part of Grove’s GMK series, the GMK5170 stands out in the 170-tonne class with robust engineering tailored for high-performance lifting in challenging terrains. The crane features a six-section telescopic boom made with Grove’s TWIN-LOCK™ system, offering a reach from 13.7 meters to 64 meters and a maximum tip height of 67 meters. The boom elevation ranges from -1.5° to +83°, allowing for flexible setup and operation in confined areas or complex lift scenarios.

The crane’s superstructure is powered by a Mercedes-Benz OM906LA engine, delivering 170 kW (231 HP) at 2200 rpm and equipped with EUROMOT 3 / EPA / CARB compliance for off-road emissions. It runs a sophisticated dual-circuit hydraulic system with an axial piston variable displacement pump and an additional gear pump for slewing. A large 915-liter hydraulic tank and thermostatically controlled oil cooler ensure reliable performance during continuous operations.

The carrier is driven by a more powerful Mercedes-Benz OM502LA engine, producing 420 kW (571 HP) at 1800 rpm with 2700 Nm of torque. This powerhouse is paired with an Allison HD 4000 SP automatic transmission, featuring six forward and one reverse gear. The GMK5170’s drive configuration is 10x6x10, with optional 10x8x10, and all axles are integrated into Grove’s MEGATRAK® independent hydropneumatic suspension system for superior terrain adaptability.

The five-axle layout includes three driven and steered axles (3, 4, and 5) and two steered axles (1 and 2), ensuring maneuverability even in tight jobsite conditions. The braking system comprises pneumatic dual-circuit service brakes, an engine exhaust brake, and spring-applied parking brakes acting on the rear axles. For enhanced comfort and control, both the superstructure and carrier cabs are constructed from aluminum, include ergonomic controls, hot water heating systems, and advanced displays including the ECOS system for crane operation feedback.

Optional equipment includes bi-fold swingaway jibs (11/18m) with hydraulic offset, lattice extensions up to 34m, heavy-duty integrated jibs, auxiliary hoists, and up to 53 tonnes of counterweight. These options allow the GMK5170 to adapt to various lift requirements, providing exceptional flexibility in load handling. The crane’s hoist system features a high-performance winch with planetary gear and brake, capable of line speeds up to 125 m/min, and supports various hook block configurations for loads ranging up to 200 tonnes.

This model exemplifies Grove’s commitment to combining lifting strength with roadability, operator comfort, and electronic intelligence for demanding construction and industrial lifting tasks.
