Product Description
The Tadano TR-280XL is a compact yet powerful 28-ton (25.4 metric ton) rough terrain crane designed for flexibility and efficiency in off-road and confined job sites. The crane’s main feature is its 3-section, full-power synchronized telescoping boom, which offers a length range from 29.5 ft to 72.2 ft (9.0 m to 22.0 m). The boom is constructed with high-strength materials and is equipped with four 12 5/8-inch (320 mm) diameter sheaves at the boom head, along with an extension cable and retraction cable for smooth extension and retraction. The boom also supports an optional jib, providing additional reach of 15 ft (4.57 m) with offset capabilities of 5°, 25°, and 45°, increasing operational versatility.
The boom elevation is controlled by a double-acting hydraulic cylinder, offering an elevation range of 0° to 82°. This provides the operator with full flexibility when positioning the crane for lifting tasks. The crane also includes an optional single-sheave auxiliary lifting device for handling lighter loads with a single line.
For lifting, the TR-280XL is equipped with a high-performance main hoist, driven by a hydraulic axial piston motor through a planetary speed reducer. The hoist features a grooved drum that accommodates 492 ft (150 m) of 5/8-inch (16 mm) diameter wire rope and provides a maximum line pull of 10,078 lbs (4,571 kg) with a maximum line speed of 351 ft/min (107 m/min). An auxiliary hoist is also available, offering independent operation with the same high-performance specifications.
The crane’s hydraulic system is robust, powered by a tandem gear pump for boom operations, swing, outriggers, and steering. The main hydraulic reservoir has a capacity of 116 gallons (438 liters) and includes advanced filtration systems for extended equipment life and reliability. Control valves are actuated by hand levers, with integral pressure relief valves for precise operation.
Stability during operation is ensured by four hydraulic outriggers with integral holding valves. The outriggers can extend to a centerline beam span of 19 ft 3/8 in (5.8 m) and retract to within 8 ft 1 5/8 in (2.48 m) when not in use. Each outrigger is controlled independently from the cab, and the system includes sight bubbles to help the operator ensure proper leveling.
The crane’s powertrain is driven by a Mitsubishi 6D14T direct-injection diesel engine, producing 134 hp (100 kW) at 2,600 RPM and a torque of 420 ft-lbs (58 kg-m) at 1,600 RPM. This robust engine provides reliable power for both crane operation and vehicle movement. The crane’s transmission is a fully automatic powershift with six forward and two reverse gears, allowing smooth operation in both high and low ranges. The TR-280XL offers three steering modes—two-wheel front, four-wheel coordinated, and four-wheel crab—providing excellent maneuverability in tight spaces.
The operator’s cab is designed for maximum visibility and comfort, with sliding doors for easy access, shatter-resistant windows, and adjustable seating. The cab controls include lever-based operation for boom telescoping, hoist functions, and outrigger positioning. A full array of instruments and indicators, such as engine monitoring systems, brake controls, and gear selectors, are easily accessible within the cab. The Tadano AML-M load moment indicator system provides essential safety features, such as angle and load warnings, to ensure safe crane operations.
In terms of mobility, the TR-280XL has a top travel speed of 31.2 mph (50.2 km/h), making it efficient for moving between job sites. The crane rides on 20.5 x 25-20 PR tires, with an option to upgrade to 16.0 x 25-20 PR tires for additional durability. The air-over-hydraulic brake system ensures responsive and effective braking during operation.
The Tadano TR-280XL offers a balance of lifting power, reach, and mobility, making it a reliable and versatile solution for rough terrain operations across various industries.
