Demag AC180
The Demag AC180 is a high-performance all-terrain crane featuring a 12 x 6 x 8 drive/steering configuration. Its carrier is built on a Demag-engineered monobox main frame, incorporating high strength fine grain structural steel with integral outrigger boxes. The crane is equipped with a four-point outrigger system, enabling fully hydraulic horizontal and vertical extension for superior stability across a full 360° circle.
Powering this behemoth is a Daimler-Benz OM 442 LA water-cooled 8-cylinder diesel engine, delivering an impressive 405 kW (550 hp) at 2100 rpm, with a torque of 2350 Nm at 1100 rpm. The engine’s substantial power is managed through a ZF Transmatik transmission, which includes 14 speeds forward and 1 reverse, alongside a transfer case with differential lockout control.

Product Description
The AC180’s mobility is further enhanced by its axles—2, 5, and 6 provide drive capabilities while axles 1, 2, 5, and 6 offer steering functionality. This setup ensures differential locks on axles 2, 5, and 6 with both transverse and longitudinal lockout controls on the 5th axle. The crane rides on 12 disk-type wheels, fitted with 16.00 R 25 tyres, supported by a hydropneumatic suspension system on all axles which are also hydraulically blockable.
For steering, the AC180 employs a dual-circuit semiblock mechanical system with a hydraulic booster, adapting to various operational needs. Safety and control are paramount, with a braking system up to EC directives, including a constant decompression with butterfly valve engine exhaust brake, hydraulic retarder, and more. The carrier’s cab is designed for operator comfort, featuring a rubber-mounted low-line construction, pneumatically suspended driver’s seat, and comprehensive controls.
On the superstructure side, a Daimler-Benz OM 904 LA water-cooled 4-cylinder diesel engine drives the crane’s operations, supported by a sophisticated hydraulic system. This system allows for simultaneous working movements across three hydraulic circuits. The crane boasts two hoists, each with variable displacement axial piston hydraulic motors, a slew unit, and boom elevation capabilities for versatile lifting operations. The spacious all-steel crane cab offers a comfortable operating environment, complete with a tiltable design for enhanced visibility.
The AC180’s boom is a testament to Demag’s engineering prowess, featuring four telescopic sections and the anti-deflection Demag ovaloid design. A 40t counterweight system and advanced safety devices ensure reliable operation under various conditions. Optional equipment further enhances the crane’s capabilities, including independent rear axle steering, main boom extensions, and additional counterweights for specific lifting needs.
The Demag AC180 crane includes a range of optional equipment to enhance its versatility and operational capability. These options include:
- Drive/Steering: An additional 1st axle drive is available for a 12 x 8 x 8 configuration, enhancing the crane’s mobility and stability.
- Outrigger Loading Indicator: This feature provides indications of outrigger loading on the carrier and in the upper cab, ensuring safer operations by monitoring the distribution of weight.
- Trailer Tow Coupling: Includes options for either Rockinger coupling with a D-value of 120 kN or Ringfeder coupling with a D-value of 190 kN, along with connections, offering versatility in towing.
- Eddy-Current Brake: Serves as an additional sustained action brake, augmenting the crane’s stopping capabilities.
- Night Heater: A self-contained water heater for the carrier cab, providing comfort during colder conditions.
- Bunk Bed: An additional bunk bed in the carrier cab, enhancing rest options for operators during long operations.
- Independent Rear Axle Steering (Crab Steer): Allows the rear and front axles to be steered independently, with the rigid axles being raised hydraulically, facilitating maneuverability in tight spaces.
- Main Boom Extension: Lengths vary from 9.7m to 38.5m, allowing for system lengths of up to 93.7m when combined with the main boom, significantly extending reach.
- Luffing Fly Jib: Offers a range of 20-58m with additional equipment, requiring a second hoist drum for operation.
- Additional Counterweight: An option for 24t of additional counterweight is available, enhancing the crane’s lifting capabilities.
- Additional Jack Leg: For specialized duties, emphasizing the crane’s adaptability to various lifting scenarios.
- Hoist II: Provides an additional hoisting option mounted on the rear of the superstructure frame, powered by a variable displacement axial piston motor.
These additional features and options underscore the AC180’s adaptability to a wide range of lifting tasks, from straightforward to complex operations, ensuring it can be tailored to meet specific project requirements.
