Product Description

The Grove GMK7450, Manitowoc’s flagship 450-ton all-terrain crane, made its European debut at Intermat 2003, where it introduced several advanced features including the MEGA-FORM boom, MEGA-Wing-Lift, and a modular boom and jib system that set new benchmarks for lifting performance in the 450-ton class.

The GMK7450’s main boom is a 5-section MEGA-FORM design, measuring 60 meters (197 feet) and constructed with Grove’s TWIN-LOCK™ pinning system for strength and stability. This boom can be extended using a variety of attachments, including a luffing jib up to 79 meters (240 feet). When combined with the main boom, the crane achieves a maximum lifting height of approximately 128 meters (420 feet) and a maximum tip height of 136 meters using full jib and boom extensions.

One of its standout innovations is the MEGA-Wing-Lift, a structural attachment that enhances boom rigidity and significantly boosts lifting capacity. When installed, it allows the crane to increase its lifting performance by 25% to as much as 60%, particularly beneficial when operating at extended boom lengths or high radii.

The crane is powered by a Mercedes-Benz OM502LA 8-cylinder diesel engine in the carrier, producing 420 kW (571 hp) and 2700 Nm of torque, coupled with an Allison 4800 SP automatic transmission. The superstructure is powered separately by a Mercedes-Benz OM906LA engine with 205 kW (279 hp) output.

The carrier frame is a 7-axle box-section design with Grove’s proprietary MEGATRAK® independent suspension system and all-wheel steering. The drivetrain offers a 14x6x14 configuration, allowing excellent on- and off-road maneuverability with multiple steering modes, including crab and all-wheel steering. It reaches speeds up to 85 km/h, with full hydro-pneumatic suspension travel and leveling.

The hydraulic system features five separate circuits for simultaneous crane functions, using axial piston pumps and ECOS electronic control for efficient operation. The hoisting system includes dual winches with line pulls up to 125 kN and hoisting speeds of 130 m/min, supported by optional auxiliary hoist gear and various jib extensions (heavy-duty and luffing).

Outriggers are hydraulically telescoping, with automatic leveling and removable rear boxes for transport. Counterweights total 160 tonnes, easily mountable via a hydraulic self-install system.

The operator cabs for both carrier and crane are designed with full climate control, ergonomic layouts, and tilting for upward visibility. Digital displays, load moment indicators (LMI), and integrated safety controls support operator performance and job site safety.

In summary, the Grove GMK7450 combines raw lifting power, transport efficiency, and jobsite versatility. Its debut at Intermat 2003 showcased it as a next-generation mobile crane capable of handling demanding lifts with increased productivity, particularly when paired with the MEGA-Wing-Lift and extensive jib systems.
