Kato KA-800
The Kato KA800 is an 80-ton class all terrain crane and the first Japanese domestic all-terrain model introduced by Kato in 1987. It features a 4-section 37.2-meter telescopic boom, with optional 10 or 18-meter offsettable jib, delivering a strong combination of reach and lifting performance. Powered by Mitsubishi engines for both the carrier and superstructure, the KA800 is equipped with a 4-axle chassis, multi-mode steering, and advanced hydraulic systems, making it suitable for diverse terrain and lifting applications.

Product Description
The Kato KA800 holds historical significance as Japan’s first domestically produced all terrain crane, launched by Kato in 1987. As the inaugural model in the KA series, it set the foundation for future developments in the all terrain segment, and remains notable for its strong performance, roadability, and operator-focused design.
The KA800 is built on a 4-axle (8×8) all terrain chassis, delivering both off-road strength and on-road mobility. It is powered by a Mitsubishi 8DC9 engine, producing 275 kW (369 hp), while the crane superstructure is driven by a separate Mitsubishi 6D16 engine rated at 139 kW (186 hp). This dual-engine setup allows for optimal power delivery to both travel and lifting operations, a feature particularly valued in rugged terrain and continuous jobsite operations.
The crane’s primary lifting component is a 4-section telescopic boom that extends up to 37.2 meters, constructed using Kato’s durable boom fabrication techniques. For added height and flexibility, the crane can be fitted with an optional lattice jib in either 10-meter or 18-meter lengths, both of which are offsettable and supported by a 3-stage offset mechanism. This extends the crane’s lifting height and reach significantly, accommodating complex and tall structure lifts.
The KA800 is equipped with Kato’s signature “FULLPOWER” boom system, offering hydraulic extension to full boom length. Boom elevation is managed by a hydraulic cylinder with a wide working angle of –2.7° to +82°, increasing flexibility in load approach. Two independently driven dual winches are fitted with automatic brakes and irregular winding prevention rollers, ensuring safety and smooth operation.
From the carrier standpoint, the crane includes a HYDRA-LEVEL suspension system, which hydraulically adjusts to improve ride quality and leveling across varying terrains. The driver can select from four steering modes: front 4-wheel, counter, crab, and rear 4-wheel steering—making tight-space maneuvering possible. The steering system can be switched and locked electronically, enhancing drivability on and off-road.
The carrier cab is a spacious 3-person design with full vibration damping and soundproofing for long-haul travel comfort. The crane operator’s cab is equally ergonomic, featuring light-touch joystick levers, a wide roof window for overhead visibility, and a clean instrument layout for ease of operation.
Other key features include:
- 950 mm wide crane cab
- Electronically controlled joystick levers
- Rugged, hydraulically telescoping outriggers
- High-performance turbocharged engine
- Variable displacement piston pump for hydraulic systems
In summary, the Kato KA800 set a benchmark for all terrain cranes in Japan with its 80-ton capacity, robust boom system, flexible jib options, and advanced drive and steering configurations. It continues to be recognized as a well-balanced crane suitable for civil, industrial, and infrastructure lifting projects.
