Key Features & Benefits
The Grove RT1650 was introduced as one of Grove’s larger rough terrain crane models during the expansion of the company’s heavy-capacity RT crane range. The crane was designed primarily for petrochemical construction, heavy industrial erection, infrastructure development, and large maintenance shutdown operations where crawler crane lifting performance was required together with the mobility and rapid setup advantages of a rough terrain crane.
A major feature of the RT1650 is its five-section trapezoidal telescopic boom manufactured from high-strength alloy steel. The main boom extends hydraulically from 14 meters to 52.7 meters and consists of a base section, three full-power boom sections, and one manually latched section extending to the maximum boom length. The telescopic boom sections slide on adjustable and replaceable Nylatron wear pads designed to improve durability and reduce maintenance requirements. Maximum tip height on the main boom reaches approximately 55.9 meters. The boom elevation system uses dual double-acting hydraulic cylinders with integral holding valves and provides boom elevation from -3° to 80°. The boom nose incorporates eight sheaves mounted on heavy-duty tapered roller bearings with removable pin-type rope guards for efficient reeving arrangements.
For additional lifting height and outreach, the RT1650 is equipped with several boom extension configurations. A standard 10-meter lattice swingaway extension is fitted with an integral offset mechanism and can be offset at 2°, 15°, or 30°. The swingaway stores alongside the base boom during transport. An optional telescopic swingaway extension increases the extension range from 10 meters to 17.7 meters while maintaining the same offset positions. The crane can also be fitted with optional 4.3-meter lattice jib sections combined with the standard swingaway extension to provide jib lengths of 14.3 meters, 18.6 meters, 22.9 meters, and 27.1 meters. The jib can be offset at 5°, 17°, and 30°. With the maximum jib configuration installed, maximum tip height reaches approximately 82.5 meters.
The RT1650 uses Grove’s hydraulic and structural technologies designed for high lifting efficiency and simultaneous crane functions. The hydraulic system uses five gear pumps and two open-loop axial piston pumps with combined hydraulic flow capacity of approximately 1,344 L/min. Hydraulic power is supplied through the superstructure engine using a PTO-driven pump system. Precision four-way double-acting control valves and multiple valve banks permit simultaneous operation of multiple crane functions. Hydraulic oil capacity is approximately 2,082 liters, and the system uses full-flow filtration with remote-mounted pressure filters and return-line filtration systems to maintain hydraulic cleanliness and reliability.
The crane’s slewing system uses a ball-bearing swing circle with full 360-degree continuous rotation. A Grove planetary “Glide-Swing” drive system with foot-applied multi-disc brake and hydraulically released spring-applied parking brake provides smooth slewing control. The swing system also includes a positive turntable lock and reaches a maximum slewing speed of approximately 1 rpm.
The hoisting system consists of main and auxiliary hoists utilizing planetary reduction drives with automatic braking systems, electronic drum rotation indicators, and cable followers. The main hoist uses Gearematic Model 46 winches capable of maximum single-line speeds up to approximately 114 m/min on the high range top drum layer. Maximum permissible single-line pull reaches approximately 9,380 kg with 5:1 factor of safety. The main hoist carries approximately 351 meters of 25 mm diameter wire rope. The auxiliary hoist uses a Gearematic Model 36 winch with maximum line speeds reaching approximately 210 m/min and maximum permissible line pull around 5,334 kg. Auxiliary rope storage capacity is approximately 259 meters of 19 mm wire rope.
Power for the crane is supplied by a Cummins KTA-1150-C turbocharged six-cylinder water-cooled diesel engine producing approximately 447 kW at 2,100 rpm with maximum torque of approximately 1,911 Nm at 1,600 rpm. Fuel capacity is approximately 946 liters. The drivetrain uses twin hydraulically driven powershift transmissions with four forward and four reverse speeds. The crane achieves maximum travel speeds of approximately 24 km/h and theoretical gradeability of approximately 55%.
The RT1650 uses an 8×8 four-axle rough terrain chassis with planetary drive steer axles mounted in tandem front and rear arrangements. Hydraulic suspension permits up to 305 mm of oscillation on the rear tandem axles. Automatic hydraulic oscillation lockouts engage on the rear tandem axles whenever the boom is not centered over the front. Steering is fully hydraulic with coordinated all-wheel steering controlled through the steering wheel and supported by an electric emergency auxiliary steering system. The crane rides on large 33.25 × 29 – 32 PR earthmover-type tubeless tires designed for severe terrain conditions.
The outrigger system uses hydraulically operated single-stage double box outriggers pinned to the main frame. Quick-release steel outrigger floats measure approximately 76 cm in diameter. Outrigger controls are located within the cab right-side console and require two-hand operation for improved safety. The crane includes a level indicator integrated into the cab.
The operator cab uses a full-vision all-steel fabricated structure with acoustical insulation and tinted safety glass throughout. Standard equipment includes a hinged skylight, sliding side windows, electric windshield wash-wipe systems, skylight wiper, hot water heater, defroster, air circulation fan, fire extinguisher, seat belt, cigar lighter, and ashtray. The cab hydraulically elevates approximately 1,143 mm to improve operator visibility during lifting operations.
Safety systems fitted to the RT1650 include a standard load moment indicator system with anti-two-block protection, audible and visual warning systems, and control lever lockout functions. The electronic display continuously monitors boom angle, boom length, working radius, tip height, relative load moment, maximum allowable load, and actual lifted load. Additional standard equipment includes electronic backup alarms, tire inflation kits, tachometer systems, and lighting packages for night operations.
