Grove RT865B

The Grove RT865B is a robust and versatile 65 US-ton (59 metric ton) capacity rough terrain crane, designed for heavy lifting in industrial and construction environments. It features a four-section, fully synchronized telescoping boom that extends from 40 ft to 125 ft (12 m to 38 m), constructed from high-strength steel with tapered roller bearings for smooth extension and retraction. The maximum tip height with the boom is 135 ft (41 m), which can be extended to 193 ft (59 m) with an optional 35 ft to 60 ft (10.6 m to 18.2 m) telescoping lattice swingaway extension, offering further reach and flexibility for different lift configurations.

The boom is equipped with a quick-reeve boom nose and a removable auxiliary boom nose, both featuring pin-type rope guards for easy rigging changes. The boom elevation is controlled by a double-acting hydraulic cylinder with an integral holding valve, offering a range of -3° to 78°.

The crane’s lifting operations are enhanced by its main and auxiliary hoists, both of which feature planetary reduction with automatic spring-applied multi-disc brakes. The hoists provide a maximum single-line pull of 16,969 lbs (7,697 kg) and a line speed of up to 517 feet per minute (157 m/min), ensuring efficient and fast lifting. The rope used is 3/4 inch (19 mm) in diameter, with a total rope length of 650 ft (198 m).

The RT865B’s hydraulic system is powered by seven main pumps, delivering a combined capacity of 199 GPM (754 LPM) at a maximum operating pressure of 3,500 psi (241 bar). The hydraulic reservoir holds 200 gallons (757 liters), and the system includes a thermostatically controlled oil cooler to maintain optimal performance in various operating conditions. The hydraulic system powers all crane functions, including boom extension, hoisting, swing, and outriggers, ensuring smooth and precise operation.

Powering the RT865B is a Cummins 6CTA 8.3L six-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine that delivers 250 hp (191 kW) at 2,500 RPM and 650 ft-lbs (881 Nm) of torque at 1,800 RPM. An alternative Caterpillar 3116TA diesel engine is available, offering similar power output. The crane is equipped with a full powershift transmission providing six forward and six reverse gears, with a maximum travel speed of 25 mph (40 km/h). The 4×4 drive system, combined with fully independent hydraulic steering for both the front and rear axles, allows for four steering modes: front-wheel, rear-wheel, crab, and coordinated steering, ensuring excellent maneuverability on rough terrain.

The crane’s stability is provided by its four hydraulic outriggers, which are controlled from the operator’s cab and feature telescoping single-stage beams with inverted jacks. These outriggers can extend to a maximum spread of 30.5 inches (775 mm) and support the crane during lifting operations with a maximum outrigger load of 95,817 lbs (43,462 kg).

The operator’s cab is designed for comfort and visibility, with full galvanealed steel construction, tinted safety glass, and acoustical lining to reduce noise. The cab includes a deluxe seat with armrest-mounted hydraulic controllers, a tilt-telescoping steering wheel, and controls for all crane functions. Standard features include a load moment indicator, anti-two-block system, cab heater/defroster, electric windshield wipers, and skylight with an opening screen.
