Kobelco KMG5220

The Kobelco KMG5220 is a 220-tonne class all-terrain crane developed under a collaborative OEM agreement between Kobelco and Manitowoc, with manufacturing taking place at the Deutsche Grove facility in Wilhelmshaven, Germany. Designed exclusively for the Japanese market, the KMG5220 incorporates Kobelco-specific safety systems and functional upgrades tailored to meet local regulatory and jobsite requirements. Its core structure and performance are derived from the Grove GMK5220, known for its versatility and high mobility.

The KMG5220 is built on a 5-axle chassis, powered by a Mercedes-Benz OM502LA diesel engine generating 530 HP (395 kW), paired with a ZF AS-Tronic automated transmission system. It utilizes hydropneumatic suspension and features all-wheel steering to achieve superior maneuverability on tight urban roads and complex job sites.

The crane’s main boom spans from 13.3 meters to an impressive 68 meters, with additional options of a hydraulic luffing jib (11–21 meters) or a bi-fold swingaway jib that extends the maximum lifting height to beyond 95 meters. Its main lifting system includes high-performance winches and advanced load monitoring, offering precision control during heavy lifts.

Transport and assembly are optimized for Japanese road regulations, with modular counterweights and easy boom removal options for legal highway travel. The KMG5220 shares counterweight systems with the GMK series, including compatibility with GMK5200-1 and GMK6300L models, enhancing logistical efficiency across crane fleets.
