Product Description
Introduced to the global market at Intermat 2000 in Paris, the Manitowoc 999 was designed to fulfill the lifting needs of one of the most demanded capacity classes in the crane industry: 275 US tons (250 metric tons). At its launch, it immediately garnered attention as a balanced solution for power, reach, and transportability—cementing its place in the mid-to-heavy crawler crane segment.
The crane’s main boom is a lattice construction, pin-connected, and extendable to 88.4 meters (290 feet), providing excellent vertical capability. For extended height and radius, it can be paired with a luffing jib system that reaches up to 101.2 meters (332 feet). Together, the boom and jib allow the 999 to achieve a maximum combination tip height exceeding 152 meters (500 feet), accommodating tasks such as bridge work, wind turbine erection, and tall industrial structure installation.
A Cummins QSM11 engine powers the 999, delivering 300 hp (224 kW). The crane employs a hydraulic system for its primary operational functions, including winching, boom hoisting, and slewing. Each of the main and auxiliary winches delivers a line pull of 43,000 lbs (19,505 kg), supporting multi-part line configurations and rapid hoisting speeds.
The 999 features a modular counterweight and boom system, enabling easier transport and faster job site assembly. The hydraulic counterweight installation system and self-assembly boom reduce setup time and crew demands, while the crawler undercarriage ensures robust stability and off-road mobility.
The operator station offers full climate control, ergonomic seating, and comprehensive displays for load moment, boom angle, and operational status. Safety and control systems such as anti-two-block, electronic load indicators, and redundant monitoring ensure safe lifting under varying jobsite conditions.
The Manitowoc 999 continues to be one of the most respected machines in its class, recognized for its powerful performance, proven design, and adaptability across diverse heavy-lift applications. Its legacy, beginning with a debut at one of the world’s premier equipment shows, underscores its impact on the global crane market.
