Grove GMK5120B

Debuting in the early 2000s, the Grove GMK5120B introduced a powerful blend of reach, strength, and advanced mobility within the 120-ton class of all-terrain cranes. The crane is equipped with a 5-section MEGAFORM™ boom that extends hydraulically from 42 ft to 167 ft (12.8 m to 51 m), providing a maximum tip height of 177 ft (54 m). The boom utilizes the patented TWIN-LOCK™ boom pinning system for efficient and secure section extension.

For increased lifting versatility, the GMK5120B supports a hydraulically offsettable swingaway lattice jib ranging from 36 ft to 59 ft (11 m to 18 m), with optional extensions reaching up to 112 ft (34 m). These extensions allow offsets between 5° and 40°, enabling operation over obstructions or at extended heights. The swing system employs dual axial piston motors and planetary gears for smooth 360° rotation at speeds up to 1.7 rpm.

The carrier is powered by a Mercedes-Benz OM502LA V8 turbocharged diesel engine, producing 469 HP (350 kW) and 2300 Nm of torque, coupled with a Daimler G 240-16 transmission featuring 16 forward and 2 reverse gears. This configuration allows a top speed of 85 km/h (53 mph). The 10x8x10 drivetrain enables excellent mobility across challenging terrains, complemented by Grove’s MEGATRAK™ suspension, which offers full all-wheel steer capability and independent hydropneumatic support with automatic leveling.

The crane’s superstructure includes a 168 HP (125 kW) Mercedes-Benz OM904LA engine powering the main hydraulic systems. Its dual hoists deliver a line speed of up to 394 ft/min (120 m/min) and maximum single-line pull of 15,400 lbs (70 kN), using 19 mm wire rope. The hydraulic system incorporates an axial piston pump with load sensing and electronic power limiting for optimal performance.

The aluminum operator cab tilts up to 20°, includes climate control, ergonomic instrumentation, and integrated ECOS and EKS4 systems for load moment monitoring and crane operation feedback. The carrier cab is also aluminum, with seating for two and full driving controls.

Counterweight options are flexible up to 68,300 lbs (31,000 kg), with modular build-up and hydraulic installation/removal capability. Safety features include a load moment limiter, anti-two block system, and extensive braking mechanisms including dual air circuits, ABS, and a retarder.
